What is Tuberculosis (TB)?
Tuberculosis is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It primarily affects the lungs but can also spread to other organs such as the kidneys, spine, and brain. TB spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Early detection and proper treatment are crucial to prevent complications and transmission.
Types of Tuberculosis
- Pulmonary TB: Affects the lungs and is the most common form.
- Extrapulmonary TB: Affects organs other than the lungs (lymph nodes, bones, etc.).
- Latent TB Infection: The bacteria remain in the body but are inactive and non-contagious.
- Active TB Disease: The bacteria are active, causing symptoms and capable of spreading to others.
Common Symptoms of TB
- Persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks
- Coughing up blood or mucus
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue and weakness
- Fever and night sweats
- Loss of appetite
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult a medical professional for prompt testing.
